A Rhine day boat or a week-long river cruise?

Search for a Rhine River cruise and you get two different trips mixed together. One is a sightseeing boat for an hour or a day, the other is a week on a hotel ship with a cabin. This site compares the first kind, and this page explains how the two differ so you book the right one.

Two trips behind one search

Type "Rhine River cruise" into a search box and two kinds of trip come back. One is a day boat, from an hour to a full day, usually booked a few days ahead. The other is a week on a hotel ship.

This site compares the day trips sold on GetYourGuide and Viator. We do not review the multi-day ships, but knowing how they differ helps you spend your money on the right one.

What a day boat gives you

A day boat is a sightseeing vessel with an open upper deck and a covered saloon, usually with drinks and snacks for sale. You board at a town pier, ride for an hour or a few, then step off and carry on with your day.

There is no luggage to carry and no cabin to check into. Prices on this site run from ~$16 for an hour in Koblenz to ~$167 for ETS Touristik's full day out of Frankfurt with coach, lunch and a small wine tasting.

The shortest options are Gilles' one-hour castle sightseeing cruise in Koblenz from ~$16 and KölnTourist's one-hour Cologne cruise from ~$21. The catch with both is the hour itself.

The Koblenz loop is shorter than the two-hour boat and turns back well before Marksburg. The Cologne hour is cathedral and skyline, with no castles or vineyards in sight.

What a week on a hotel ship gives you

A river cruise ship is a floating hotel. You sleep in a cabin and eat most meals on board, and most mornings you wake up moored in a new town.

Many itineraries run between Amsterdam and Basel over about a week, often with stops in Cologne or Koblenz. Your luggage stays in the cabin while the ship handles the moves between cities.

The weak point for castle lovers is time. A ship usually passes the whole gorge in a few hours, and depending on the schedule part of it may come at meal time or after dark. Ask when your ship sails the Loreley stretch before you book.

That comfort comes with a fixed route and a fixed price for the whole package. You trade freedom for ease, which suits some travelers well and frustrates others.

Who each one suits

A simple test helps. Do you want the Rhine to be the whole trip, or one day of a wider holiday? If it is one day, a day boat fits. If you want the river to carry you for a week, look at the ships.

A day boat suits you if any of these sound familiar:

  • You are on a city break in Frankfurt, Cologne or Bonn and have one free day
  • You want to choose the stretch, such as the castle gorge rather than the Cologne skyline
  • You travel with children who will not sit still for a week of shore excursions
  • You bring a dog; Gilles' two-hour Koblenz boat welcomes them
  • You want to spend tens of dollars, not thousands

A hotel ship suits travelers who want several countries without repacking, and who enjoy the ship as a place in its own right. It is a holiday format, not a sightseeing tool.

How the money works

The day trips here cost between ~$16 and ~$167 per person, and you pay extra for food and drinks plus the train to the pier. Go with Flo's private day comes to ~$142 per person when the van is full, and one traveler alone pays far more.

We do not price week-long cruises, since fares depend on the cabin and the departure. The fair comparison is per day, because a cruise bundles a bed and most meals, while a day boat leaves you to book your own hotel and dinner.

Our Rhine cruise price guide lines up all seven day trips, with what each one includes and what you pay on top. It is the quickest way to see where a given budget lands on the river.

Adding a day boat to a city stay

From Cologne

This is the easiest add-on in the region. KölnTourist's 90-minute skyline cruise from ~$27 leaves Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer by the cathedral and holds 4.4 from 3,720+ reviews on GetYourGuide. It is a city cruise, with no castles at all.

From Koblenz

Koblenz sits at the northern gate of the gorge. Gilles Rheinschifffahrt's two-hour boat leaves Brücke 2 at Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer and heads upstream past Lahneck and Stolzenfels towards Braubach and Marksburg.

The catch is that it covers the northern edge only, not the Loreley stretch further south. Our Koblenz or Rüdesheim guide compares the two boarding towns in detail.

Two hours of castles from the Koblenz pier

The Gilles boat suits a free afternoon in Koblenz, with commentary on the castles you pass and drinks to buy on board. It holds 4.4 from 2,450+ reviews and is sold on GetYourGuide; the second button opens Viator's page of Rhine day cruises.

From Frankfurt

Frankfurt has no castles on its own riverbank, so the gorge means a day out. ETS Touristik's day trip from ~$167 meets near the main station and includes a boat ride of 1–1.5 hours between Rüdesheim and St. Goarshausen.

Our hour-by-hour Frankfurt guide walks through that day. Before you pick a date, the guide to the best months shows when the boat part is most likely to run.

Can you do both?

Some travelers combine them. They take the week on a ship, then add a night in Koblenz or Rüdesheim before or after to see the gorge by day boat at their own pace.

That pairing makes sense if your ship passes the Loreley at an awkward hour. The guide to the river's stretches shows which part holds the most castles, so you know where that extra night pays off.

Hours or nights

Day boat or hotel ship, answered

Is a Rhine River cruise a day trip or a week?

Both trips use the name. Day boats run from an hour to a full day and need no luggage, while river cruises on hotel ships usually last about a week with cabins and meals. This site compares the day trips only.

Can I see the Loreley on a day boat?

Yes, if the boat sails the southern part of the gorge. ETS Touristik's day trip from Frankfurt has its boat ride between Rüdesheim and St. Goarshausen, which passes the rock. The two-hour Gilles boat from Koblenz does not reach it.

How far ahead should I book a Rhine day boat?

For a weekday city or Koblenz boat, two or three days' notice normally does. Book earlier for summer weekends and the full day from Frankfurt, and choose a listing with free cancellation in case the river runs high or low.

Can I take luggage on a day boat?

Day boats are not set up for suitcases. Leave your bags at the hotel and bring only what you need for a few hours on deck, such as a warm layer and a hat.

Is a day boat cheaper than a river cruise?

Per trip, by a wide margin. Counted per day the difference shrinks, since the ship covers your cabin and most meals and a day boat covers neither.
